The cashier at the Marathon in Pennington also said that Knoxville didn't have any fuel and she only had 11 inches of regular left in the tanks. She also said that they'll be raising the price 50 cents after lunch.

At the Shell on the four lane in Coeburn its still 3.69, but will go up in an hour

Was just told here its 3.99 in Pennington and already 4.25 in Dot.

I just heard it was $6 in Duffield and $5 in Kingsport at places. Now whether this is true or not, I don't know.

Yeah it's 3.99 in Dryden and Pennington. The gas station in Dryden was backed up to the road when I came through.

I really doubt its $6, but who knows? The way things are looking that very well could be possible

Knoxville-area gas prices are rising and could jump as much as a $1 gallon by the end of the day.

"There's a good chance it will, but it's not written in stone yet. A lot depends on how much supply keeps coming into the area and what we do as consumers," AAA spokesman Don Lindsey said.

Supply is a growing problem as Hurricane Ike sweeps up the Texas coast, threatening crucial gasoline production facilities.

Sherman Wynn headed to the Weigel's at the Westland Drive exit of Pellissippi Parkway to fill up his Ford Explorer this morning after hearing on the radio that gas could hit $5 a gallon by day's end.

"I had to make sure I at least get back home," said Wynn, 49, who lives in Scott County but puts about 150 miles a day on his SUV because work is more plentiful in the Knoxville suburbs. He remodels homes.

"It's getting to the point where I'm going to have to get something closer to home," said Wynn, who is self-employed and figures he spends about $40 a day on gas. "I can't keep doing this."

He paid $3.899 per gallon to fill up before 9 a.m. He also has tried to figure out the shortest routes when he travels and keeps his speed at 55 miles per hour to save gas.

"I wish somebody that had the knowledge to arrange something (to address the problem). If somebody come on the radio and said, 'We're going to park; I'm tired of this,' … I would park," Wynn said. "I'm sick of it."

Some area gas stations have already run out of fuel and wholesale gas prices spiked 30 percent on Thursday.

How high Knoxville area prices will go "is a really good question," Lindsey said. "People are talking $5 (a gallon). Will it go that high? Well, maybe," Lindsey said.

Lindsey urged motorists not to top off their tanks just to beat a dollar price increase.

"If you need gas, buy it. If you don't need it, don't buy it. If we all rush out and top off our tanks we will create the shortages we're trying to avoid," Lindsey said.

The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas was $3.656 today, up 1.1 cents overnight, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

On the world oil market, prices rose over $102 a barrel Friday as investors kept a close eye on Ike.

By midday in Europe, light, sweet crude for October delivery rose $1.38 to $102.25 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.71 overnight to settle at $100.87 after dropping as low as $100.10 per barrel. The last time Nymex crude traded below the $100 mark was April 2.

Exxon Mobil Corp., Valero Energy Corp., ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil Co. have begun halting operations as Ike headed straight for the nation's biggest complex of refineries and petrochemical plants.
